I use a scanner called Neat Receipts for all of my receipts. It did cost a lot of money, but it was worth it. It automatically finds the date, store, and credit card that you used and lets you fill in the comments area any important items that you bought. When you need to find something, you just use the search engine and it finds it. You can also categorize for budgeting! I haven't gotten to the budgeting part of it yet because it is too new. But, it is way worth it!
Before I owned the Neat Receipts:
I would just use my all-in-one scanner/printer and scan only the important receipts and then tag each one with the items that were important/expensive on the receipt. It worked, but I always seemed to forget to put the date in there and it is hard to find on the picture itself. I always thought that system worked good until I found the easier Neat Receipts mentioned once. Go find an advertisement for it!
Notes:
~$200 for Neat Receipts Scanner
Walmart didn't accept my copied receipt until I talked to the manager.

Maja;
I am a professional organizer and I too am an "organized space" lover. I have been all my life. I WISH I had a file cabinet at a young age much like you. Boy, did I ever miss out.
My favorite paper tip:
Begin where your paper piles are located and move forward from there. Remember that if you piles are located in a specific space, THAT may be the BEST PLACE for your paper action file to be housed if possible. (I am not talking about your 4 drawer file cabinet, just your lateral paper action file.)
I appreciate that you are sharing the tips. Vicki Winterton

Great idea to write the date on the top of the receipt. I hate looking for dates on receipts, you never know if it is month-day-year or day-month-year. And you never know where the date will be. I will do that for sure!
Also, let me stress the importance of the label maker in your filing cabinet. I have really n ice printing, I get compliments on it all the time so I didn't think I needed to use the label maker because my printing was good enough. My husband did the files one year and used the label maker and WOW! what a difference. It is all uniform and way, WAY easier to read. Since then we always use the label maker.
Love it Maja!

One idea that I heard a while ago for keeping your kids art work/school things in order was to take a picture of them. Some stuff you might want to keep the actual item but some stuff a picture is good enough. Plus, then if you scrapbook you can easily put it in there.
